What is Claude?
Claude is an AI assistant built by Anthropic, an AI safety company. You talk to it in plain language โ on the web at claude.ai, in desktop apps for Mac and Windows, or on iOS and Android โ and it helps you write, research, analyse, plan, learn and build.
What sets Claude apart isn't a single flashy feature. It's the quality of thinking: Claude follows nuanced instructions, admits uncertainty instead of bluffing, and handles very long inputs โ entire reports, contracts, codebases or book manuscripts โ while keeping track of details.
In one sentence: if ChatGPT is the Swiss Army knife, Claude is the sharp chef's knife โ especially good at writing, careful reasoning and code.
Who it's for
- Knowledge workers who write, summarise and analyse all day.
- Developers who want an AI pair-programmer or an autonomous coding agent.
- Students and lifelong learners who want a patient tutor that explains things step by step.
- Creators and marketers who need scripts, outlines, captions and fresh ideas.
- Teams that need admin controls, SSO and shared projects.

Claude's models, explained simply
Claude comes in several "models" โ different sizes of the same brain, trading speed and cost against raw capability. In the app you can switch between them; the defaults are sensible if you'd rather not think about it.
| Model | Think of it as | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Fable 5.1 | The flagship | The hardest research, analysis and engineering problems |
| Opus 5.5 New | Near-flagship brains, faster and cheaper | Demanding everyday work: complex writing, agentic coding, computer use |
| Sonnet 5 | The balanced all-rounder | Most day-to-day tasks with a great speed/quality mix |
| Haiku 4.5 | The sprinter | Quick answers, high-volume and lightweight tasks |
What's new: On September 22, 2026 Anthropic released Opus 5.5, reporting Fable 5.1-level performance on most work at roughly 40% lower cost than Opus 5 and more than 30% faster output. Anthropic says Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 are coming in the following weeks. Read our news summary.
Claude Code: an AI engineer in your terminal
Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool, included with Pro and above. Rather than pasting snippets into a chat, you point it at your project and describe what you want. It reads your codebase, plans the change, edits files, runs tests and commands, and iterates until the job is done โ asking permission before anything risky.
It runs in the terminal, in VS Code and JetBrains IDEs, as a desktop app, and on the web โ where it can work on your GitHub repositories in a cloud sandbox while you do something else.
What we used it for
- Building a complete static website (like this one!) from a single description.
- Tracking down a bug from a stack trace across a dozen files โ in minutes.
- Writing missing unit tests and fixing the failures they exposed.
- Upgrading dependencies and refactoring legacy code, with a clean git commit at the end.
Not a developer? Claude Code is still surprisingly approachable for automating spreadsheets, renaming thousands of files, or building a small personal tool. Describe the result you want in plain English.

Yes. The free plan includes chat on web, desktop and mobile, web search, file uploads, memory and artifacts. Paid plans add more usage and advanced tools.
Is Claude better than ChatGPT?
It depends on the job. In our testing Claude is stronger at long-form writing, careful analysis of long documents, and agentic coding. ChatGPT has a broader built-in feature set such as image generation. Many professionals use both.
Is my data used for training?
Anthropic lets consumer users control whether their chats may be used to improve models in privacy settings; business plans (Team, Enterprise) are not used for training by default. Review the current settings in your account.
Can Claude browse the web?
Yes โ web search is available on all plans and answers include source citations. Paid plans also offer a Chrome extension that can work inside web pages.
Do I need to be a programmer to use Claude Code?
No, though it helps. Claude Code works from plain-English instructions and asks before taking risky actions. It's included with Pro and above.
Should you use Claude?
Yes โ and start today on the free plan. Claude is the most well-rounded AI assistant we've tested for serious work. The writing is a notch above the competition, it handles huge documents with ease, and Claude Code turns it into a genuine engineering partner.
